Getting into the beauty bandwagon can be a bit difficult. There are a lot of products out there that sometimes it gets confusing. Sometimes it could get expensive as well because let’s face it, makeup ain’t cheap!
My advice is that if you’re a newbie with makeup, don’t hoard. Instead, know your skin type and try to find something that would suit you. There are a lot of blogs posts and YouTube videos out there to get you started on that. Okay, it’s a bit hypocritical of me to advise this because I tend to hoard! But, my lame (but valid in my opinion) excuse is that I’m a beauty blogger/newbie makeup artist so I tend to try out a lot products.
So if I could go back in time and give my 17 year old self a beauty kit of affordable makeup products to start with, it would probably include these products that I’m going to show you in this blog post. Mind you, the individual prices of these products do not exceed Php500 or $12. Also, I would like to point out that I have oily skin; so the face products that I recommend here are specifically for my skin type.
For the base, I broke it down into foundation and BB Cream. If you want something with a medium yet buildable coverage, I recommend the Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation. This foundation is quite thick so it needs a bit of work to press it onto the skin. But, the coverage is pretty good and it’s matte so depending on the oiliness of your skin, you may not need to set it with a powder. If a light, natural coverage is what you’re after, I highly recommend the ZA Cosmetics BB Cream UV White. This one has a creamy consistency so you can work it into your skin with just your fingers. It’s finish is quite dewy but it works well on oily skin!
Concealer is a must for me because I have dark spots and blemishes on my face. The drugstore concealer that I’ve been really impressed with is the Catrice Camouflage Cream. This creamy concealer blends nicely onto the skin and it conceals wonderfully! I especially like using it under my eyes!
With my VERY oily skin, I always set my makeup with powder whether I use a foundation or a BB Cream. The one that I’ve been loving is the Pixy UV Whitening Two Way Cake Perfect Fit Powder. This powder has good coverage and staying power! It’s available on a variety of shades to suit your skin tone as well!
For blush, I recommend the Catrice blushes! They are available in a nice variety of colors and they are incredibly pigmented and long-lasting. The shade that I have is a deep mauve shade called Rosewood Forest.
The drugstore has a lot to offer in terms of eye makeup, especially eyeshadows. But my favorite drugstore eyeshadows of all time are from Wet N Wild! Their eyeshadow trios are phenomenal! If a natural eye look is what you’re after, Walking on Eggshells is the bad boy for you! But, for an edgy smokey eye, go for the trio in Silent Treatment! I swear, these trios are incredibly pigmented and buttery smooth!
For brows, I recommend using a tinted brow gel just because it’s easier to use but effective in making the brows look nice and well-groomed. I really love the Etude House Brow Gel because it gets the job done!
Mascara is a must have for me and I’ve been a loyal Maybelline mascara lover ever since I started using makeup. However, a new and more affordable mascara caught my eye and I really love it! It’s the Pixy Mascara which is incredibly waterproof and makes my lashes look thick and long! Pixy also does a great and affordable eyeliner. It’s pigmented and doesn’t smudge easily. I’d say it’s staying power is at 5-6 hours.
You know I love my Shut Up and Kiss Me Moisturizing Lippies by Happy Skin Cosmetics! Those are by far my favorite lip products! They’re very pigmented and very moisturizing! And they are very long-lasting! However, I’m not sure if I consider these lip products as drugstore. Also, they are cutting it so close to the Php500 (the regular ones are Php499 while the limited edition ones are at Php 549) mark so I thought I’d recommend a more affordable lip product.
E.L.F. also makes great lip products. I personally love the E.L.F. moisturizing lipsticks because the pigmentation is great and I love how smooth they feel on the lips. They are not as long-lasting as the Happy Skin ones though, but still a good lip product in my opinion considering how affordable they are.
If you were to recommend a drugstore beauty starter kit to makeup newbies, what products would you include?
